The step is quite simple, but there’s some application involved because you’ll need to do 2 conversions :

Convert YouTube video to MP3

Convert Mp3 file to “.m4r” extension.

1. Convert YouTube video to MP3

There’s some online application you can use to convert a Youtube video into an mp3 file. If you search for “convert youtube to mp3″ or “youtube to mp3 converter” term in search engines (eg. Google.com, Bing.com & Yahoo.com), you may find some very useful online tools from websites to convert youtube videos into mp3, and you can even download the converted file to your computer.

Now that you have an mp3 file converted from a Youtube video. What you’ll need to do next is to make sure that the song does not exceed 30 seconds limit as an iPhone ringtone. If the converted song have a length of more than 30 seconds, you may need to trim the mp3 file to shorten the timing. Fortunately, there’s some online tools to do this job as well. Search for the term “online mp3 editor” from search engines, and you’ll not get disappointed with the result. Trim the mp3 so that it does not exceed the time limit, and save a copy of it to your computer. After that, you can start to convert the mp3 file to an “.m4r” extension which is recognized by your iPhone as a ringtone.

Convert Mp3 file to “.m4r” extension

This process can’t be done online at the time this tip is posted. Perhaps we can see some innovation in future to enable this conversion to be done online. But for this time, I can find a downloadable software that can convert an mp3 file into a “.m4r” extension. This software is known as MP3 to M4R iPhone Ringtone Maker by Aiseesoft.

You can download a trial version of this software from Aiseesoft official website. In a few simple step, your mp3 will be converted into a “.m4r” extension. There it is, the new ringtone is ready to use for your iPhone.

iTunes being one of possible method to create your own ringtones for your iPhone. It’s quite simple to create and you can even edit and save only part of any song as your ringtone.

First, select the song that you wanted to use as your iPhone ringtone from iTunes library. The song can be in Mp3, ACC or AIFF file format.

Play the song and make decision on which part of the song you wanted to use as your iPhone ringtone. (Please take note that your iPhone ringtone created from iTunes cannot be more than 30 seconds length or it will not be recognized by iTunes as ringtone) You can note down the starting point of the wanted part and it’s stop time.

Once you have done it, right click on the song, and click on “Get Info”.

Under “Options” tab, you can see Volume Adjustment, Equalizer Preset, Media Kind, Rating, Start Time, Stop Time, and some other options. Adjust accordingly as you wish, but more importantly is the Start Time and Stop Time. As what I’ve mentioned earlier, the length should not be more than 30 seconds. Once you have satisfied with the setting, Click “OK” button.

Highlight the song again. Click on the “Advanced” menu and select “Create AAC Version” and you will see a new file of the song with a shorter track time. Listen to the newly created song file to see if you have the correct start and stop time setting.

Once you have satisfied with it, right click on the original song (with original length), and click on “Get Info”. Under “Options” tab, uncheck the Start Time and Stop Time boxes, and click “OK”. This is to make sure that your iPhone will be able to play the original song as well.

Drag the new song file onto your computer desktop, then delete it from your iTunes library. Rename the file extension on your desktop to ‘.m4r’

Double click on the icon on your desktop and iPhone will recognize it as a ringtone and import it directly to your ringtones folder.

Sync your iPhone with iTunes.

When your iPhone sync is complete, go to Settings » Sounds » Ringtone on your iPhone. You should find your new ringtone listed above the default iphone ringtones, in a new list named “Custom”.

That’s it. Enjoy your new and free iphone ringtone.
